Strike: FG moves to meet ASUU’s demand, constitutes White Paper panel

Image
Strike: FG moves to meet ASUU’s demand, constitutes White Paper panel The Federal Ministry of Education has commenced a move to meet one of the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The ministry disclosed this in a press statement issued by its Director of Press and Media Relations, Ben Goong, on Thursday. The PUNCH observed that the move by the government to inaugurate a white paper drafting panel came almost a year after the visiting panels to tertiary institutions constituted by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), submitted the reports of their findings to the education ministry. The visiting panel, which was inaugurated by the President, was to look into the lapses in the administration of universities. One of ASUU’s demands is the release of the White Paper panel report. A press statement from the education ministry titled, ‘Federal Government constitutes white paper drafting panels for tertiary institutions, explained that ten white paper dr...

ASUU on leave, failed to give notification of strike – Ngige

Image
Minister of labour and  employment, Chris Ngige The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Wednesday stated that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities was a “leave” following the failure of the union to notify his ministry before embarking on strike. Ngige also noted that the union failed in its agreement with the National Inter-religious Council headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad, and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev Samson Ayokunle, by failing to report to the committee before embarking on strike. The minister made this known in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Abuja. The PUNCH reported that ASUU on February 14, 2022 had announced the commencement of a one month rolling and comprehensive strike after its National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Lagos, Akoka. The union had blamed the federal government for constantly failing to honour some of the lingering de...

I AM WAITING FOR ASUU for negotiation - ADAMU ADAMU (MINISTER OF EDUCATION)

Image
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on Wednesday, said he is looking for the Academic Staff Union of Nigeria (ASUU) for declaring a one-month warning strike at a time the Federal Government is attending to their demands. The minister, who expressed surprise at the industrial action, denied that he had been shunning meetings with the union as he maintained that he had indeed been the one summoning them in the effort to resolve outstanding issues.   The university lecturers embarked on the strike on Monday to press their demands, which they claimed the Federal Government has been reluctant to meet. Adamu spoke at the post-Federal Executive Council (FEC) media briefing at the presidential villa, Abuja, telling correspondents that if after several negotiations between ASUU and government, agreement was still not reached, it is no longer the fault of the government. Fielding questions, the minister said: “ASUU, unfortunately, they have gone on strike and I am looking for them...

UNIVERSITY: UNIBEN Students Barricade Road, Protest Against ASUU Strike

Image
Scores of students of the University of Benin on Wednesday barricaded the ever-busy Benin-Ore-Sagamu road to protest the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).   ASUU declared a four-week warning strike on Monday, after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos, to compel the Federal Government to implement the renegotiated 2009 agreement it had with the government. They were in their numbers by the entrance of the Ugbowo campus of the university chanting slogans and solidarity songs like “aluta continua…” and “education is our right,” among others.   The students expressed their frustration over the incessant strike of university teachers, urged the federal government to heed to ASUU demands. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the protesting students carried placards with various inscriptions such as “5 years course has turned to 7 years; “FG settle ASUU” and “Enough is Enough.” Some of them turned the highw...

ASUU Strike: UNN, UI, UNILAG, UNIJOS Lecturers Shun Classes, Others Hold Congress

Image
The Academic Staff Union Universities’ chapters on Tuesday adopted different approaches on the four-week warning strike which the union declared on Monday. Our correspondents who monitored lecturers’ compliance with the strike reported that while it had taken effect in some universities, others said they would hold congresses before commencing the industrial action.   ASUU, during a press conference at the University of Lagos, Akoka, declared four-week strike because of the Federal Government’s failure to honour the agreement it signed with the union. In Katsina State, lecturers at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University and the Federal University, Dutsin-ma shunned work in compliance with ASUU’s directive. Many students were seen loitering around on the campus, while those who volunteered information under the condition of anonymity, said they were awaiting their lecturers’ decision on the strike.   It was learnt that the national strike would commence on Wednesday at the i...

Breaking: ASUU to go on One-month Warning Strike

Image
After serious deliberations that dragged into the early hours of Monday, the National Executive Council, NEC, of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has voted to embark on one-month warning strike to press home its demands from the government.   A source at the meeting held in Lagos told Vanguard in confidence that the strike is to allow the Federal Government do the needful failure to which the union would go on an indefinite strike.       “We just want to give the government a long rope hoping that it would see the need to avoid a total paralysis of academic activities in the nation’s universities. We are parents too and have our children in the system but we cannot watch and allow the total collapse of education in the country. “Our agitation is in the interest of all and if the system is made better, we will all enjoy it. Prominent personalities in the country have waded into the matter but the government seems recalcitrant. Our National Presid...

FALSE NEWS MADE BE AWARE

Image
As millions of Nigerian students, parents, and education stakeholders expect the outcome of a meeting by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, a Twitter account named ‘ASUU chairman’ declared an indefinite strike. Many news platforms and bloggers also reported that ASUU declared an ‘indefinite strike’ quoting the Twitter handle. But The PUNCH has found this to be false. One of the misleading tweets on the handle read, “#ASUU Finally the meeting has ended. Expect an official report. This is against our wish but we have to put the needs of our union first, I announce to you with a heavy heart the commencement of a nationwide strike starting from 14th February till our needs are met.” Executives of ASUU, including the National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, had confirmed to The PUNCH that the union has no Twitter account. Circulating image also fake! Apart from the fake Twitter account, an image is also being circulated online. The image, mostly shared on WhatsApp, has ...

Strike: Anxiety as ASUU takes decisive action Monday

Image
ANXIETY has enveloped students, parents and university staff as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU’s National Executive Council meeting is ongoing. The meeting taking place at the University of Lagos, Akoka Campus, was convened by the union to decide possible action to take following the alleged refusal of the federal government to accede to its demands. The union had last week hinted that its decision, whether to proceed on strike to protest the government’s action or continue to render services would be determined at its ongoing NEC meeting, expected to end tomorrow in Lagos. The decision which will be via voting would determine the fate of students of public universities across the country, who had just returned to campuses after the yuletide break. The union latest action is aimed at forcing the government to sign the re-negotiated FGN-ASUU 2009 agreement, payment of the balance of Earned Academic Allowances, deployment of University Transparency and Accountabilit...

Image
The Director-General of Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies(MINILS), Ilorin Comrade Issa Aremu has cautioned both the federal government and members of the Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities (ASUU)against the strike, and consider, “the bigger picture “which is the student. Comrade Aremu speaking in an interview with journalists in Ilorin on the state of the nation also urged the two key players in the looming strike to consider the children of the poor who he said would be most affected by the strike.   He said, “All the parties must look at the bigger picture and the bigger picture is the students and in this case, students of the poor who are going to lose their academic calendar.” He said, “strike makes sense if you make them brief, it to compel the other party to come for negotiation and once talk continue there must be a cessation of hostilities so that all the parties will not negotiate under pressure. “   He recalled his days in tertiar...

Decision on strike to be reached soon ASUU

Image
Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities will finalise decision on an impending strike at the end of an ongoing meeting at the University of Lagos.     A chairman of one of the branches, who preferred anonymity because he’s not in a position to speak, said the least consideration so far is a warning strike. He explained that “ASUU is being considerate but the actions of the Federal Government are not helpful”. “The least consideration for now is a warning strike. Some of our branches representatives feel we should commence strike outrightly but others advised that apart from the lecture free-day declared, we should embark on another warning strike before the full, indefinite strike.” Asked what will be the next step after the warning strike, he replied, “The NEC will determine. But it is either we hold another branch congresses or we embark on the full strike if government is not forthcoming. The resolution of the ongoing meetig will determine.” The PUNCH had...

Checks by Sunday reports showed that a number of universities already preparing for semester examinations are very apprehensive that the exercises may be affected. For instance, the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, has slated the first semester examination for commencement by the last week of this month, but students and lecturers are now waiting for the outcome of the meeting of the National Executive Council, NEC, of ASUU to know what would be the next line of action. A 300 level student of Geology in the school, who gave her name as Grace, said with the situation of things whether the exam would start ot not later this month is dependent on the outcome of the meeting. “The timetable by the school management is that we would start our first se...
