BREAKING: ASUP calls off strike, asks lecturers to resume

  The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has called off its two weeks warning strike, asking all lecturers to resume on the 30th of May, 2022. This is according to a statement by the union’s national publicity secretary, Abdullahi Yalwa. According to him, the union is requesting members to resume duties effective 30th of May, 2022, while hoping that government will take advantage of the window to address the five outstanding items. The union had, on May 16, 2022, commenced a two-week warning strike over the failure of the government to meet some lingering demands.

FG APPROVES ESTABLISHMENT OF ‘A’ LEVEL CERTIFICATES DATA BANK—JAMB BOSS SAY’S

  The Registrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, says the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has approved the establishment of Advanced Level (A Level) certificates data bank in the country.   He stated this yesterday in Abuja at the opening session of a three-day workshop organised for Public Relations’ staff of the Board in collaboration with Premium Times Academy, with the theme ‘Media, Publicity and Public Relations in the Modern Age.’   Oloyede, represented by Director, Legal Services, Abdul Wahab Oyedokun, said the data bank would ensure all ‘A’ Level results are registered under one platform to bring about standardisation and integrity of the certificates.   He said Board had taken several measures to ensure total sanity in its examination processes.   He said from 2017 to 2022, JAMB had remitted a total of N27.2 billion to the Federal Government’s coffers and used N9.7 billion for capital projects

JSS2 student dies after being flogged by his teacher over homework

  A 12-year-old JSS 2 student of Simple Faith Schools, Agbara, Lagos State, named, Emmanuel Amidu, has been confirmed dead after he was allegedly flogged by one of his teachers simply identified as Steven.   According to the victim’s father, Akinola Amidu, the deceased student and some of his classmates were flogged by their Mathematics teacher for not completing their assignment on Thursday, May 12, 2022. He said his son started vomiting shortly after the beating and was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Surulere, where he gave up the ghost on Friday, May 13, 2022.   The aggrieved father who accused the school of trying to cover up the incident and protecting the teacher said when his son was pronounced dead, the school management quickly rushed to report the case at Morogbo Police Station at Agbara saying he died from vomiting.   Mr. Akinola is demanding the arrest and prosecution of the teacher, as he urged the state government and the police to gi...

FG Approves N34bn Minimum Wage Adjustment Arrears For Varsity Workers, Others

  The federal government has said it would spend about N34 billion on the ongoing payment of minimum wage consequential adjustments to education sector workers with effect from 2019.   The beneficiaries include the members of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and their counterparts in the polytechnics and Colleges of Education.   The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, disclosed this while responding to questions from labour correspondents in Abuja, on efforts to end the prolonged ASUU strike. According to Ngige, the universities would get N23.5 billion, the polytechnics N6 billion and Colleges of Education are to get N4 billion, totalling about N34 billion.   When asked to give update on the engagement with ASUU and other university workers who are currently on industrial action, the Minister said the committees set up during the last tripartite plus meeting of the government and university based unions were given a fortnig...

  The result of the October/November 2021 accreditation of some academic programmes of the University by the National Universities Commission (NUC) is out. We report that 14 courses in the University including MBBS, accounting and veterinary medicine, got full accreditation. Six courses had interim accreditation, but Banking and Finance was denied full accreditation. Those with full accreditation are: - Arabic studies - History - Theatre Arts - Educational administration and planning - Education history - Education physics - Library and Information science - Primary education studies - Social studies - Accounting - Business administration - MBBS - Sociology - Veterinary Medicine Those with Interim accreditation are:  - Christian Religious Studies - English Language - Islamic Religious Studies - Linguistics - Philosophy - Computer Science  The maturity date for this status is 2026

ASUU strike: US calls for creative ways to fund Nigerian varsities

  As the ASUU strike enters its 13th week, U.S educational experts have called on Nigerian universities to look outside the government for the funding of their institutions.  The call was made during a two-day conference organised by the Public Affairs Section of the US Consulate-General as part of efforts to strengthen the education system in Nigeria. One of the U.S. higher education experts, Dr. Patrick Bennett, vice-president of Academic Quality and Planning at Franklin University, Ohio, shared the U.S perspective on higher education partnerships and funding. Dr. Bennett discussed best practices in exploring potential revenue streams and resources outside of government funding for higher education and how universities can build and maintain productive relationships with alumni, private sector, and other donor institutions. UNILAG professor, Ope-Davies, wins professorship position in Germany

  Tunde Ope-Davies, director, Centre for Digital Humanities, University of Lagos (CEDHUL), has won another visiting professorship fellowship awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany. The award, tenable at the University of Hamburg, Germany will enable the professor to conduct a research project on Digital Political Multilingualism in Nigeria.   This study will contribute to his ongoing national project on the use of digital technologies in Nigeria’s democracy. Sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), the visiting research fellowship was awarded under the aegis of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Alumni Sponsorship and Network programmes supported by the Federal Republic of Germany.  

We’re In Full Compliance With The National Strike, Disregard Resumption Notice – EKSU–ASUU Tells Member

  The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ekiti State University has distanced itself from the reopening of the Institution for academic activities, insisting that it is in full compliance with the strike action by the National body.   In a statement reportedly signed by the Chairman, ASUU, EKSU, Dr Kayode Arogundade, described the purported order for the Institution to resume as purely political and accused the Ekiti State Government of refusing to accede to its demands.   The Union also vowed to hold the State government and University management responsible if any harm is inflicted on any member of the Union as it revealed that it had been receiving various threats.   The statement came shortly after Spokesman of the Ekiti State University, Bode Olofinmuagun announced that the institution had directed the immediate reopening of the school.

Ambrose Ali University shuns ASUU strike, announces resumption date

 The management of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, has announced May 26, 2022, as the resumption date for academic activities in the institution, despite shutting down the institution over the ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The university stated this in a circular released on Monday through its registrar, Ambrose E. Odiase. The university's management had on Monday, March 22 issued a statement asking students to vacate their hostels and the school premises within 24-hours over what it called described as “the roll-over national strike em­barked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)”.

EKSU withdraws from ASUU strike, announces resumption date

 The Ekiti State University in Ado-Ekiti (EKSU) has announced the resumption of academic activities following the closure of the school due to the ongoing industrial action by ASUU . The resumption notice was contained in a statement issued by Bode Olofinmuagun, Director of Information and Corporate Affairs of the institution on Monday, May 23, following a meeting by the management of the university. According to the statement, the university's management was concerned about the plight of students and parents as schools continue to be closed. It also explained that students who were admitted for the 2021/2022 academic session were yet to resume, while the 2020/2021 second semester is yet to be concluded. Consequently, in-person academic activities at the university resume on Tuesday, May 24, 2022.

NASU denies plans to suspend strike

  The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has denied plans to suspend its ongoing industrial action. The NASU General Secretary, Mr Peters Adeyemi, said this while speaking with newsmen on Monday, in Abuja. According to Adeyemi, the union will be meeting on Tuesday, in Abuja to consult with its members on the state of the strike. The Federal Government has begun paying NASU members the arrears of the consequential adjustment of the national minimum though not all have received the payment so far,,’’ he said He, however, noted that no other financial commitment made to the union had been actualised except the consequential adjustment of the minimum wage. He added that the payment was not enough for the striking workers to suspend the ongoing industrial action. Kidnapped ABU student regains freedom after almost 2-years in captivity

 A student of the Ahmadu Bello University has regained freedom after spending a year and a half in Boko Haram captivity. One Godwin Tanko who shared a photo of the now freed student on Twitter revealed that the student named Becky Inuwa is his course mate, and she was rescued by soldiers.

 The Ogun state police command has arrested one Ayobami Oluwatobiloba Runsewe, a 25-year-old class teacher at a nursery and primary school in Ago Iwoye on May 19th for the alleged rape of a 13 years old girl(name withheld), who is a pupil in his class. Runsewe was arrested after the victim's mother, went to the station in the company of the victim to lodge a report about the incident. According to the parent, the teacher lured the victim to his house in the Ayegbami area of Ago Iwoye after the school lesson at about 4:30 pm and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her. The blood-soaked pants of the victim were presented as evidence in the station. On interrogation, the suspect initially denied having anything with the victim, but when the victim confronted him, he was unable to say anything further. ASUU Gives Update On Strike As FG Pays Arrears

  The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Saturday noted that the strike continues despite the Federal Government’s payment of minimum wage arrears. The union stated this in a circular released by the University of Lagos branch of the union titled, ‘Payment of minimum wage arrears’. The chairman of ASUU in UNILAG, Dele Ashiru, confirmed the circular. Ashiru while reacting to the arrears payment said it is not the core demand of ASUU. The circular read, “The leadership of our Branch has been inundated with calls concerning the recent payment of the long-overdue arrears of the consequential adjustment of the minimum wage. “Our members are reminded that this is not one of the core demands upon which the ongoing strike action is premised.
