ABSU VC pleads with parents over fee increment

Image
The Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu, Professor Onyemachi Ogbulu, on Wednesday, pleaded with parents/guardians to prepare themselves for a slight adjustment in fees by the school. Addressing the 17 newly inducted “Batch B” medical doctors during the 28th induction/swearing-in ceremony, the VC said that the present economic realities had made it necessary for an upward review of school fees for some professional courses. Represented by the Deputy VC – Academics, Professor Godwin Emezue, he said that despite the initial challenges which delayed the induction of these new Doctors, there was every reason to celebrate that it finally came to pass. He stated that the graduates of the university had continued to make the University proud and expressed optimism that the new Doctors would also excel and be good ambassadors of the Institution. He stated, “ABSU is still one of the best in the country with the best academics that can stand their ground anywhere in the world, m...

Why we allowed CBT centres to increase service charge – JAMB Registrar

Image
The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has explained why the board allowed Computer Based Test Centres to increase the service charge to N1,000 for its April 9 mock examination. Oloyede explained that the slight increase in the service charge for the examination by the CBT centres was to allow them to do a thorough job, owing to the increase in the cost of diesel to power their generating sets. While reviewing an award by the Board of Vanguard Media Limited, on Tuesday in Abuja, he hinted that all arrangements for the successful conduct of the examination had been put in place by JAMB. The main UTME had been scheduled by the board to commence from May 6 to May 16. We are saying that we have allowed the CBT centres to increase the amount. We have not increased the fees; we have even said anybody can decrease the fees. “But we have hitherto asked the centres not to increase more than N700, but now we have seen the reality and we have said ...

FG, ASUU Trade Blame as Strike Enters 50th Day

Image
The Minister of State for Education, Mr Emeka Nwajiuba, has said striking university workers including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions are mean and wicked for shutting down universities across the country. This is just as the ASUU’s strike enters its 50th day on Tuesday (today). The unions are currently on strike over failure by the Federal Government to honour the various agreements reached with them. Nwajiuba, in an interview with one of our correspondents, said it was an act of wickedness for the unions to go on strike for entitlements that the government would still give them. The minister said, “We are negotiating with the Polytechnics and Colleges of Education and the same thing ASUU is asking for is the same thing they are asking for but they are willing to continue working. “The only place we have a suspens...

Image
Ogun state NANS calls for govt intervention as cult clashes ravages on The Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the state Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and the relevant security agencies to tackle the incessant cult clashes currently ravaging the state before it spreads to tertiary institutions. The students' body made the appeal at a joint Congress of NANS and the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) held at the Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE), Omu Ijebu, on Saturday, April 2. It was gathered that no fewer than sixteen persons have so far lost their lives to cult clashes, mostly between the Eiye and Aiye groups, in different locations across the state in just two weeks. The incessant killings led to a declaration by president President Muhammadu Buhari who ordered security agencies to dismantle cultists in the state. Although all the killings had occurred outside the campuses of tertiary institutions in the s...
