FG Assures Nigerians: we’ll Look Into ASUU Strike Threat

 The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Wednesday, stated that the Federal Government would look into the threat by the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The minister also said most of the union’s grievances were domiciled in the ministries of Education and Communications and Digital Economy. Ngige stated this in an interview with The PUNCH in Abuja. ASUU had issued several threats of an indefinite strike over what the union tagged the failure of the Federal Government to honour some of the agreements it signed with it in the past. In 2020, ASUU went on a nine-month strike, which was called off in December of that year.   In 2021, the union issued fresh threats and gave the Federal Government a three-week ultimatum to address its grievances. The union later shelved the move following the payment of N22.1bn earned allowances and the release of N30bn revitalisation fund to the universities. JAMB: New USSD Code For 2022 UTME introduced

  This is to inform the general public that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the adoption of a new USSD code. This was announced in its weekly bulletin released on Monday by its Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin. USSD CODE The board announced the adoption of ‘66019’ as an additional and optional USSD code besides the ‘55019’ code that had been in operation since 2018, for UTME/DE registration and other essential services. It explained that the initiative was to facilitate a hitch-free 2022 UTME/DE registration exercise by ensuring that was no difficulty whatsoever in the creation of profiles by candidates, especially in a situation whereby many of them would send requests via one USSD code. UNIZIK: NEW MATRICULATION DATE FIXED

  This is to announce to the general public that the new official matriculation date of the University is on the 4th March, 2022. Nnamdi Azikiwe University has rescheduled its earlier scheduled date for matriculation exercise. The new date is 4th of March, 2022 and the time is 10am.   This is to inform the general public that the 2022/23 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination( UTME) and Direct Entry (DE) Registrations will now commence Saturday, February 19th and end on the 26th of March 2022.the board had earlier scheduled the exercise for February 12, 2022.However, in a notice on Tuesday, JAMB said the postponement was to enable “more fine-tuning of the upgraded and user-friendly procedures for candidates’ registration.  The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said its members in universities across the country will embark on another strike soon if the Federal Government fails to implement the Memorandum of Action it signed with the union last year. The Chairman of ASUU in the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Dr Biodun Olaniran, and Secretary, Dr Toyin Abegunrin, who said this in a statement issued after the congress of the union held on Monday, stressed that the failure of the government to fully implement the agreements was worrisome. The union said it had resolved to embark on an indefinite strike if the Federal Government fails to accede to its demands within a certain period of time. JAMB NEWS: JAMB INTRODUCE WHATSAPP PLATFORM TO ITS SUPPORT/COMPLAINT CENTRE

  This is to inform the general public that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), a proactive agency with the responsibility of conducting entrance examination into all the tertiary institutions in Nigeria, has introduced the use of WhatsApp as additional support and complaint platform. With this extra platform, candidates and other stakeholders would have the benefit of instant messaging and solutions to whatever query they might have regarding any of the operational processes of the Board. To this, ASD Technologies, the developer of the WhatsApp solution, announced that the platform would provide help with such things as “step-by-step” registration procedure, for instance, as well as providing a feedback mechanism for effective service delivery. ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES (ASUU) SETS TO MEET FOR DECISION ON FRESH INDEFINITE STRIKE

University lecturers are heading for another strike over the re-negotiated 2009 agreement with the Federal Government, it was learnt at the weekend. There are indications that the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet on February 14 to review the implementation of some components of the agreement and decide on industrial action. It was learnt that the re-negotiated agreement has five components, including funding for revitalisation, autonomy for universities and welfare. The committee, which re-negotiated the agreement, was headed by Prof Munzali Jibril, Pro-Chancellor, Federal University Lafia, Nasarawa State and Chairman, Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities. ASUU Buhari Joins Religious Leaders pleading to ASUU To Discard Strike

  President Muhammadu Buhari begins the week under review with a promise that the FG would honour promises made to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This, President Muhammadu Buhari said, was to prevent disruptive strikes, engender uninterrupted academic programmes and improve funding of education institutions. Mr.President made the pledge on February 1st, when he received members of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) led by the Co-Chairs, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Samson Ayokunle. ABSU Bans Students from Driving Vehicles on Campus

This is to inform the general public and those in Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu that the Management has banned the use of personal vehicle owned by student and display of their wealth on campus.  The management said that henceforth only staffs and accredited visitors are allowed to use or drive cars on campus and that students are not allowed to do so.  Meanwhile, any student seen violating this directive of the managements will face his or her punishment in which disciplinary action will be taken.  ✍️✍️ Dikeocha Martins

ASUU begins preparation for strike, declares Monday lecture-free

  The National President of the Union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, disclosed this in an interview saying that they urged its chapters across the country to sensitise members of the public on the situation between the union and the Federal Government and declared Monday, February 7, 2022, as a lecture-free day in a bid to enhance the sensitisation.    The last national strike by ASUU was in March 2020 and lasted till December when the Memorandum of Action (MoA) was signed. However, a year after signing the MoA, ASUU accused the government of failing to fulfil its side of the bargain and threatened to mobilise for another strike immediately. The government quickly moved to pay N55 billion as part-payment for the Earned Academic Allowance and Revitalisation Fund, but the union was unmoved until the Nigerian Inter-religious Council (NIREC) and other dignitaries waded in.
